The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority altered several of it’s bus routes beginning Monday, including four in Gilroy. The VTA also will have special line schedules for the Fourth of July holiday.

The changes were made in order to streamline service and improve connections with Caltrain and the new Capitol Light Rail Extension.

Also, downtown construction modified Monterey Street so that busses could travel down the length of it, instead of avoiding certain sections. A representative from the VTA said that they took advantage of the new construction to speed up service by offering more direct routes.

Four of the Gilroy lines, 17, 19, 68 and 521, face changes in routes and time schedules, and the addition of new stops. The location of current stops will not be affected.

The changes for the four routes are as follows:

Line 17 (from the Gilroy Transit Center to St. Louise Hospital) will now travel down Forest, Lewis and Monterey Street to the Gilroy Transit Center on Monterey Road, in addition to it’s normal route.

Line 19 (from the Gilroy Transit Center to First and Santa Teresa) will travel down Sixth and Monterey streets to the Gilroy Transit Center, also in addition to it’s normal route.

Line 68 (from Gavilan College to San Jose) will travel down Monterey Street between Fourth Street and the Gilroy Transit Center, instead of going down Eigleberry Street.

Line 521 (from the Gilroy Transit Center to Lockheed Martin/Moffet Park) will travel down Monterey Street between First and the transit center, instead of down Church Street.

On the Fourth of July, the VTA will run extra trips to it’s Great America station on line 141 from Fremont, and from Tamien, Curtner and Capitol light rail stations to the San Jose America Festival. In addition, all men and women in the United States Armed Services can ride all VTA busses and light rail for free on the Fourth of July only.

For details on the holiday schedule or the new schedule starting July 5, call VTA customer service at 321-2300, or visit www.vta.org.
