Buick Scramble at Gilroy GC

The Buick Scramble, the world’s largest amateur golf tournament, is scheduled to host a local championship at Gilroy Golf Course on Sunday, June 26.

Sponsored by Gilroy Pontiac Buick, four-person teams with certified USGA handicap indexes are eligible to compete in the Buick Scramble Local Championship at Gilroy Golf Course. Winning teams will advance to compete in the Buick Scramble PGA Sectional Championships in the summer. Two winning teams from each PGA Sectional Championship will advance to the Buick Scramble National Championships, scheduled for Oct. 13-16 at Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando, Fla. Interested teams can sign up for the local championship at the golf shop through June 25, 2005.

Tiger Woods returns as the Buick Scramble Honorary Chairman for the 2005 season. As the Buick Scramble Honorary Chairman, Woods is scheduled to present the trophies to the 2005 Buick Scramble National Champions at the awards ceremony following the conclusion of the final round of the national championships.

The PGA of America sanctions the Buick Scramble, now in its 22nd season and fourth under the Buick banner. The Buick Scramble hosts more than 1,500 local championships nationwide annually. Local winners advance to one of 104 PGA Sectional Championships, with those winning teams advancing to the Buick Scramble National Championships.

Entry fees are $100 per person. This includes a variety of Buick Scramble tee-gifts, greens fees, golf carts and incentives, including a dozen Nike golf balls and a redeemable Buick Scramble test-drive certificate.

Gavilan co-ed baseball camp

Gavilan College will hold its inaugural co-ed baseball camp beginning June 20.

The camp, which will be led by Gavilan baseball head coach Neal Andrade, Gavilan assistant coaches and players, is for children ages 7-13 who are interested in learning the basic skills to improve their baseball talent.

Two five-day sessions will be held, the first beginning on Monday, June 20 and ending Friday, June 24 and the second beginning on Monday, July 18 and ending Friday, July 22. Each day, the camp will take place from 9am to 12pm at the Gavilan College baseball field. The fee for each session is $75. Campers should bring a glove, bat, hat, baseball shoes, sweatshirt and a snack.

Batter up for the Junior Giants

Calling all young sluggers and volunteer coaches! It’s time to suit up and play ball, Junior Giants style. Junior Giants baseball fever, which began 11 years ago in 18 communities, has spread across California and into Nevada and Oregon – and it’s time for you to join the team.

The Gilroy league is looking for a few more good kids and coaches before it can begin playing ball at the end of June. Interested coaches and kids, ages 8-11 should call either (408) 847-4686 or 877-JR-GIANT to sign up.

Midnight Madness tourney

The 4th Annual Midnight Madness Junior golf tournament is slated for Friday night, July 1 at Gilroy Golf Course. This tournament is played after dark with glow-in-the-dark golf balls. The field is limited to the first 60 participants and it has filled up the past three years. The festivities start with a putting tournament at 7pm followed by a hamburger barbecue. Once the sun goes down, the golfers head out to play “nitelite golf” with glow in the dark balls, lighted flags and lighted tee markers. The cost of the event is $30 per player which includes the putting tournament, prizes, BBQ dinner, drinks and golf balls. So juniors, gather your friends and make a foursome for the most fun you can have after dark.

One-man scramble at Gilroy GC

Ever have that urge to drop another ball down and take a “mulligan” after a bad shot? Well, now you can and still be within the rules at the first-ever “One Man Scramble” golf tournament at Gilroy Golf Course. The fun event is being held on Friday, July 15th with a 5:30pm after-work start for this nine hole event. Players will be broken into flights as determined by their handicaps. The low qualifier in each flight will qualify for the sectional tournament with a chance to compete in the championship finals at Poppy Hills GC in October. The field is limited to the first 40 sign-ups so call Gilroy GC at 848-0490 today to sign up. All participants must have a valid handicap index to compete.

GHS girls’ volleyball camp

The 2005 GHS Girls Volleyball Camp is an all-skills camp for all levels where players will learn the fundamentals of volleyball. The camp will cover passing, setting, hitting, blocking, serving, serve receive, various rotations and game play. All camp proceeds go directly to the Gilroy High School volleyball program.
