Yafai mourns death of brother
After a bye week, the 4-0 Gilroy High football team returns to action this afternoon at North Monterey County.
But the Mustangs will do so with a heavy heart – and without their head coach.
When the game kicks off in Castroville at 2, Darren Yafai will be en route to Tampa, Fla., where his brother was killed in a motorcycle accident earlier this week.
Yafai was told the tragic news after Wednesday’s practice, but Saturday was the earliest flight he could find. Assistant coach Craig Martin will take over head coaching duties against the Condors.
“All we want for Darren is for him to do what he needs to do,” said Martin, longtime head of Gilroy’s special teams’ unit. “And what he needs to do is be with his family as part of the healing.”
