If there’s a fan favorite this week, it has to be Gilroy’s most famous dad, Bobby Garcia.
Favorable karma surrounds most of the other panelists. Columnist Brett Edgerton picks as the early-season leader at 15-4. Boxer Kelsey Jeffries picks as the newly crowned IBA super bantamweight champion.
Mark Cummins picks as the athletic director of a mind-boggling 3-0 Live Oak football team. And Father Coleman?
Well, he picks as the overwhelming favorite of you-know-Who.
Papa Garcia, though, didn’t pick this week’s games with much positive energy surrounding him. He picked them with a cold sweat surrounding him, as he lay in bed with flu-like symptoms.
But like his son Jeff, who often plays through pain, the former Gav coach found it in himself to pick through sickness.
When reached at his home Wednesday, Garcia cleared his throat just enough to convey one simple message to the 10 teams he picked this week: “Hey boys, you go out there with all you got…,” Garcia pleaded from his bed.
“And win just one for the Sniffler.”
Truly inspiring stuff.
