Dave Wiley, the Morgan Hill man who competed in the robot fighting national competition in San Francisco earlier this month, finished solidly in the middle of his competition. Wiley competed in the ant-weight category – that is, with robots that weigh a pound or less. His robot, Stumpy, won two of his matches and lost two.

The idea of the matches is to have two bots fight each other in a 4′ x 4′ arena. The bots are remote-controlled, and the idea is to push, flip or otherwise force your opponent out of the arena. Or, you can try to demolish your opponent.

At another competition this month, Wiley lost both one-on-one fights, but did fairly well in the rumble – a big, multi-bot fighting fest – until Stumpy lost power.

But Wiley managed to create a sensation when he brought out two modified Battlebot toys and let kids from the audience drive them, possibly influencing the next generation of bot battlers.
