Dear Editor,
Your recent change to morning delivery and a focus on local news
in your main and sports sections has its good and bad points. It
now takes me more time to read through The Dispatch before it
enters the recycle bag (good), but now I leave the house later in
the morning (bad).
Dear Editor,

Your recent change to morning delivery and a focus on local news in your main and sports sections has its good and bad points. It now takes me more time to read through The Dispatch before it enters the recycle bag (good), but now I leave the house later in the morning (bad).

In recent issues I’ve been impressed with the quality of reporting. I especially appreciated Lori Stuenkel’s articles on farm equipment thefts and Katie Niekerk’s article on the Gilroy Sports Park. The detailed map you published added greatly to the story.

I am a member of the Gilroy branch of the American Association of University Women. For years we complained among ourselves that The Dispatch focused almost exclusively on male sport. Not any more! For the last few years local female sports have been given extensive coverage. Thank you!

AAUW on a national level has been addressing equity issues for more than 100 years. Title IX, a federal law addressing barriers women and girls have faced in education and athletics, was strongly supported by AAUW, and this law continues to generate controversy.

On Tuesday, Nov, 16, the Gilroy AAUW will present “Title IX= Progress for Women” at 7pm in Gavilan College’s Room SS214. The public is encouraged to attend. Presenters will be: Gloria Nevarez, JD, Assistant Commissioner/Senior Women’s Administrator, West Coast Conference; Jack Daley, Director of Athletics at Gilroy High School; and Ron Hannon, Director of Physical Education and Athletics at Gavilan College.

Title IX affects not only women’s athletics, but also facilities and sports opportunity for young men as well. If you have a child in local sports and want to be aware of how Title IX may affect their future activities, plan on attending this event Nov. 16 at 7 pm, Gavilan College, Room SS214.
