GILROY – Jay Baksa, city administrator, will be recognized at the International City/County Management Association annual conference in San Diego on Oct. 20 for his 30 years of service in local government.

Baksa is the longest tenured Chief City Executive in Santa Clara County, taking up his position as Gilroy City Administrator in 1983. Prior to coming to Gilroy, he was City Manager of Cortez, Colorado from 1978 to 1983, assistant City manager of Delaware, Ohio from 1975 to 1978, and Administrative Assistant in Montrose, Colorado from 1974 to 1975.

Baksa earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1973, and a Masters in Public Administration Degree from the University of Kansas in 1975. He is currently active in the Gilroy Rotary Club, Leadership Gilroy, and coaching basketball.

Car seat inspection and installation fair

GILROY – Actor Erik Estrada will join CHP Officers during the ‘Car Seat Inspection and Installation Fair’ on Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gilroy Crossing Shopping Center, 6705 to 6975 Camino Arroyo.

CHP Officers will inspect, install, and, if necessary, replace car seats for local residents.

New car seats for participants who have broken, outdated, or recalled car seats are being donated by 21st Century Insurance. Service is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Disco down

GILROY – City of Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie present ‘Disco Island,’ an annual Summer Children’s Theater Production, in the South Valley Junior High School Cafeteria, 385 I.O.O.F. Ave., at 7:30 p.m. each night.

Come ‘feel the heat’ and ‘dig the beat’ in this tropical island paradise and take the ultimate musical trip back to the 1970’s. Performances are: Fridays, Aug. 6, 13 and 20; Saturdays, Aug. 7, 14 and 21; Sundays, Aug. 8 and 15; Wednesdays, Aug. 11 and 18; and Thursdays, Aug. 12 and 19.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person. All proceeds will benefit the City of Gilroy Youth Programs.

Kids’ history tour

GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society’s free monthly walking tour will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m. at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. This month’s tour is ‘The Children’s Tour,’ which features places of interest to our local young ones.

Ice cream social

GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society invites everyone to celebrate summer the old fashioned way with an ‘Ice Cream Social’ on Aug. 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Willey Cultural Center, 140 Fifth St.

Enjoy ice cream with homemade toppings and ragtime piano music.

The public is invited. The cost is $5 per person, or join the society that evening to get in free. George and Genelle Azevedo will also provide antique car rides for only $5 per person.

Proceeds will benefit the Society’s Newspaper Preservation Project for the Gilroy Museum.

Refresh driving skills

GILROY – Motorists 50 and older can refresh their driving skills in the AARP Driver Safety Program on Saturday, Aug. 28. Participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety, as well as new DMV tests and laws.

Three year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on auto insurance upon completion of the course.

Rummage for Rover

SAN MARTIN – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is preparing for its third annual rummage sale to be held in September. Donations of usable household goods, clothing, pet supplies, etc., are accepted.

Clean out the house and help animals at the shelter through a tax deductible donation, that may be dropped off at the San Martin Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave., Monday through Saturday, except Tuesdays, from noon to 5 p.m.

Class reunion

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Class of 1974 will hold its 30th Class Reunion on Saturday, at the Gilroy Hilton.

CD release party

GILROY – A CD release party for local group Juz-Cuz will be be held at The Strand Theater, 7588 Monterey St., on Sunday, Aug. 15.

At 2 p.m., there will be a guest-list only buffet lunch for invited press, radio, friends and family.

Following at 4 p.m. will be a Juz-Cuz matinee performance open to the public.

Tickets are $25 and each ticketholder will receive a free full-length Juz-Cuz ‘The Return Of The Players; CD and will be entered into a drawing to win a trip accompanying Juz-Cuz on tour.

This concert is going to be videotaped, as clips of the performance will be used in their upcoming music video.

Juz-Cuz is a six-piece instrumental/vocal group formed in 1997 in San Martin, when a group of pre-teen cousins got together to create some music (hence the name Juz-Cuz). Juz-Cuz play their own instruments, write their own songs, and perform like the classics themselves.

Their sound is a blend of artists such as The Average White Band, Marvin Gaye, Chicago, and Stevie Wonder, with contemporary artists such as Justin Timberlake, The Black Eyed Peas, Jamiroquai and R. Kelly.

Cars in the neighborhood

SAN MARTIN – The second annual San Martin Neighborhood Alliance (SMNA) ‘Happy Days Car Show Fundraiser’ will be held in the San Martin Country Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Food, fun and live music of the JJ HAWG band. Admission is $5.

A registration fee of $20 includes T-shirt and entry fee.
