GILROY – Celebrate summer the old fashioned way with an Ice Cream Social on Aug. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Willey Cultural Center, 140 Fifth Street.

The event sponsored by the Gilroy Historical Society will feature ice cream with homemade toppings and ragtime piano music played by local virtuoso Candace Fazzio.

The public is invited for $5 per person, or join the Society that evening to get in free. George and Genelle Azevedo will provide antique car rides for an additional $5 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Society’s Newspaper Preservation Project for the Gilroy Museum.

Wildlife hike

GILROY – Experience nature and discover how and why a wide variety off wildlife call the canyon home on this two-mile hike with a park ranger on Aug. 7.

The Wildlife Hike at Uvas Canyon County Park, begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m.

Meet at the amphitheater. Bring hiking shoes, layered clothing, water and sun protection.

Dogs OK on leash. $5 vehicle fee to enter park.

Ohlone ways

GILROY – Discover how the native Ohlone people lived and used natural resources along Uvas Creek for their everyday needs.

Participate in a guided tour with activities at Chitactac-Adams County Park, located in Gilroy at the intersection of Watsonville and Burchell roads, from10 a.m. to noon.

Rummage for Rover

SAN MARTIN – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is preparing for their third annual rummage sale to be held in September.

Donations of usable household goods, clothing, pet supplies, etc., are now being accepted.

Clean out the house while contributing to help animals at the shelter through a tax deductible donation.

Donations may be dropped off at the San Martin Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave., Monday through Saturday, except Tuesdays, from noon to 5 p.m.
