GILROY – Gilroy Unified School District Trustee Bob Kraemer and GUSD parent Rhoda Bress are the only candidates to have officially field for the November election in which three board seats are up for grabs.

The last day to file for the Nov. 2 election is Friday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m.

Bress filed both a declaration of candidacy and a candidate statement Wednesday. She was out of town at press time and unavailable for comment.

GUSD incumbent John Gurich has pulled papers and plans on filing today or Tuesday. He will not turn in a candidate statement.

The current fee for filing the 200-word candidate statement in the Santa Clara County ballot is $1,710. Gurich did not file a statement the first time he ran for school board.

“I thought it was high four years ago, but now the price is outlandish,” he said. “You can put down what you want (in the ballot statement), but it’s meeting (the voters) in person and talking to them that really goes a long way,” he said.

Board President Jaime Rosso is also expected to run for a second term.

Art Silva, retired plumber and Gilroy High School coach, pulled papers but isn’t sure he will file. His wife Cathy Silva teaches at Gilroy High School and his two youngest children are enrolled there. Interested in bringing back vocational programs to the high school, Silva wants to make sure he is prepared to serve as a trustee.

Silva plans on attending the school board meeting Thursday before making his final decision. He realizes with a Friday deadline, he is waiting until the last moment.

Three seats on the Gavilan College Board of Trustees are up for grabs, one each in the Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Benito County areas.

Manly Willis filed papers Tuesday to run for the Gilroy-area seat currently held by Mark Dover. Dover, 38, has said he will seek a second term.

The other two Gavilan seats up for grabs belong to Morgan Hill Trustee Leonard Washington and San Benito County Trustee Tom Breen. Neither has filed to run, although Breen, 68, has said he plans to.

The statement filing fee for Gavilan is $3,030.
