Dear Editor,

I just have to put in my three cents worth (it use to be two cents but there is inflation) into the discussion of when does life begin?

Actually human life began on this earth with Adam and Eve and reproduction has been but a perpetuation of that life since its origin. The ova is living tissue, the sperm is living tissue their union is but a repeat of life’s cycles.

The question of when does life begin in relation to abortion has little to do about the physiology of living tissues. The real question involved is related to the individual’s culture. Culture is a complex system of various factors: simply put, culture has three major components, language, religion, and economics. Language is the glue that holds the group in common accord or association. Religion establishes the moral and ethical codes of conduct and develops the abstract beliefs of the community; economics determines the affluence of the society.

Only man develops a true culture through his ability of abstract thinking. Only man has a religion – a product of that abstract thinking ability. Animals are incapable of having a religion or culture. It is also doubtful animals have a conscious: a natural inner sense of right and wrong as first postulated by Cicero, a Roman statesman.

This is called Natural Law, innate only in man as contrasted to lower animals. In most cultures, communism excepted, life is sanctified. Pre-meditated killing at any stage of life is murder. This is declared, or professed in the 10 Commandments. An exception to this law is war.

For example when the Hebrews assaulted and killed the Canaanites to obtain the Promised Land. In the absence of religious restraint or cultural deterrence, killing, premeditated or not, is acceptable. Note the Tom Cat killing the newborn kittens: no cultural restraint no conscious ridden with quilt,an act – totally unemotional.

Unfortunately, I see our society on the abortion issue subtly drifting and slipping into the Tom Cat culture. I am not alone in my concern. I suggest you read Professor Robert Borks’ book “Slouching Toward Gomorrah” or pat Buchanan’s “Death of the West.”

Abortion, once forbidden, illegal and thought abhorrent is now acceptable legally and culturally. Today our society is not just slouching toward Gomorrah, but it seems society is on a fast skateboard, going down a steep hill, no helmet on, heading for who knows what or where?
