Libraries across the nation will begin celebrating National Library Week Sunday.

The celebration began in 1958 and is sponsored by the American Library Association to promote the use and support of all libraries – public, school and special.

According to the American Library Association, Americans go to libraries twice as often as they go to the movies but they spend three times as much money on salty snacks as they do on public libraries.

The association suggests making use of libraries in a number of ways.

Librarians can recommend books and help with research topics, and libraries are good business resource centers, including information on how to find jobs.

Some facts about libraries

• The United States has more libraries than McDonald’s restaurants

• Libraries record more than 1.1 billion visits each year, compared to 204 million sports tickets sold in a year.

• U.S. libraries circulate more items every day than FedEx ships packages.

• Libraries worldwide hold 16 billion books.
