DEAR EDITOR:

I want to express the gratitude of the Rucker School community for your generosity in sending photographer James Mohs to our school to take a picture of all the Rucker students. He was so gracious and helpful.

On Dec. 5, the first day that we had arranged, the heavens opened and there was a deluge just as we had our picture scheduled. He said he would come back. It was after winter break before we could both find the time. He was so patient. Not only did he take a great picture, but while he was on the roof students asked if he would toss down all of the balls that were up there. He obliged to a chorus of shouts and screams from an appreciative audience.

We enjoyed seeing the picture in the paper with the article about what we were doing for the family of Steve Rucker, the firefighter who lost his life in the Southern California fires last summer. When members of the Home and School Club saw the excellent pictures, they wanted to have copies made for themselves and realized that it might be a thoughtful “fundraiser” for their organization. Without batting an eye, The Dispatch agreed and wished us well. They will be on sale at our Open House on April 29. Not every newspaper would be that generous. AHHHHH one of the great things about being part of the “heart” of a warm community!

I want to take this opportunity to also thank others who have helped with this gift to Firefighter Rucker’s family. In addition to Rucker paraphernalia which includes T-shirts and a jacket with the Rucker logo plus mementoes from our 100th birthday party in 1994, we are sending a set of tickets to Bonfante Gardens, items from the Garlic Festival including a cookbook, and a signed copy of Claudia Salewski’s new book about Gilroy which mentions the Rucker family.

We do not know if his family has any relationship to the Rucker family after whom our school is named. A member of the family did come to our 100th celebration and also contributed old family recipes to the Rucker cookbook, which is one of the items we are sending. Whether there is a relationship or not, I can imagine that perhaps some quiet Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Rucker will enjoy coming past our school to show it to her children and will share with them the pride all of us have in having the Rucker name.

Thanks so much for your assistance in helping me show our appreciation and support to Mr. Rucker’s family for the sacrifice he made last fall.

Janice Krahenbuhl, Gilroy
