Gilroy Mustangs

Gilroy headed into Wednesday’s match with Trinity with only two girls and Coach Daniel Valdez left with a great sense of pride.
The Mustangs lost 339-313 with both Lizette Alcantar and Nicole Dan carding a 48 at Gavilan Golf Course. While he was proud of the girls’ performances, he was even prouder of their display of sportsmanship.
On two separate holes Dan displayed great sportsmanship by removing the flagstick before Trinity putted. The rules state if a player fails to remove the flagstick, they will be penalized a stroke. Rather than see that happen, she removed it for her opponents so their scores wouldn’t suffer.
“This shows the kind sportsmanship Gilroy is producing and I commend her for her great sportsmanship,” Valdez said via email.
Trinity’s Jordyn Palma was the match medalist, finishing with a 44. Dan and Alcantar tied for the second lowest scores.
The Mustangs (1-7) will be back on the course at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to play Watsonville.
