A Gilroy man who allegedly tried to crash head-on with police was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on Wednesday afternoon.
Randy Garcia, 49, of Gilroy was arrested and transported to the Santa Clara County Jail and booked on assault with a deadly weapon and evading charges following a reckless driving incident on the 8100 block of Parish Way and subsequent short pursuit.
At approximately 3:49 p.m. officers responded to the area of Welburn Avenue and Parish Way for a report of a possible drunk or reckless driver. Garcia was seen driving onto opposite lanes of traffic by the witness. Garcia noticed he was being followed, made a U-turn and accelerated toward the witness vehicle, nearly colliding with her vehicle, according to police.
Officers said they located Garcia’s vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver again accelerated his vehicle at high rate of speed toward the officer’s patrol car, police said. The officer conducted an evasive maneuver to avoid a head-collision with Garcia’s vehicle.
Garcia led officers on a short pursuit, which police terminated in the interest of public safety due to Garcia’s erratic behavior and driving. Police later found Garcia’s vehicle on the 900 Block of Irish Court. Officers located and arrested Garcia at a residence associated to him on the 8100 Block of Parrish.
