Residents living on Ferguson Road, just south of Crews Road in rural east Gilroy, lost power after a car crash the day before New Year’s Eve left them sitting in the dark for a reported 24 hours.
According to a CHP report released today, Monday, by Officer Herb Kellogg, 29-year-old Pedro Castaneda-Martinez of San Jose was driving a 2005 Chevy Colorado northbound on Ferguson Road at approximately 50 to 60 mph around 5:10 p.m. Dec. 29.
There were two 6- and 10-year-old child passengers in the car, both from San Jose, the CHP states.
For an unknown reason, Martinez allowed the vehicle to travel onto the east shoulder of the road and collided into a utility pole. He then traveled in a northerly direction and collided into a tree and a fence before slamming into a second tree and coming to a stop, the report reads.
Martinez was trapped in the vehicle as a result of the collision and sustained lacerations to his face and arm. He also complained of pain to his chest, hip and left arm, according to the CHP. After being extricated from the vehicle he was transported by a CalStar Air ambulance to San Jose Regional Medical Center.
The two children both complained of pain and were taken by EMS Rural Metro to the same hospital. They sustained minor injuries, the report reads.
Wires were down from the utility pole that fell over when Martinez collided into it, and Ferguson Road was re-opened the following day at 9:30 a.m. after the utility pole was replaced.
