A 25-year-old Gilroy man was killed in a head-on collision early Sunday after a Mountain View man drunkenly drove the wrong way on U.S. 101, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Casey Matthew Olson, 22 of Mountain View, faces potential manslaughter and DUI charges after he sideswiped two vehicles and crashed into a vehicle carrying Christian Reyes, of Gilroy, authorities said.
Olson was driving a Honda van northbound in the southbound lanes south of San Jose just before 2 a.m. when he sideswiped a tour bus and bounced off of a Honda Civic. Olson then collided with Reyes’ vehicle.
Reyes was pinned in the passenger seat and died at the scene, authorities said. The driver of Reyes’ vehicle, a 21-year-old Gilroy man, was not seriously injured.
Olson was booked into Santa Clara County Jail after being treated for broken ribs and his bail is set at $250,000.
Immediately after the wreck, a Volkswagen swerved out of the way and ended up rolling over in a roadside ditch but the driver escaped without serious injuries, authorities said. Neither the driver of the Honda Civic or the driver and 25 passengers of the tour bus were injured.
