Gilroy City Council unanimously approved a series of 2 percent salary increases for both the city clerk and city administrator at the April 21 meeting.
Earlier this month, two council sub-committees reviewed the performance of both City Administrator Tom Haglund and City Clerk Shawna Freels and compared their compensation to those of nearby cities, according to Mayor Don Gage.
Haglund, who received an annual salary of $217,403 prior to council approval, will receive a $4,268 jump in pay on May 1 and an additional $4,348 increase on July 1. Haglund’s total salary by July will reach $221,751, excluding benefits. Haglund also receives $6,000 a year for a car allowance.
City Clerk Shawna Freels will see a salary increase of $2,094—retroactively effective to Jan. 1—bringing her total salary to $106,790. On July 1, Freels’ total salary will be $108,926 after another two percent increase, amounting to $2,136.
“She’s been doing an excellent job,” Gage said.
The sub-committees’ recommended raises match two percent salary increases for the city’s general and management employees, represented by the ASCME Local 101 and GMA bargaining units, set to take effect in July, according to city documents.
