Sir Arthur Cannon Doyle’s ageless mystery thriller, “The Hound Of The Baskervilles,” has been adapted by British writers Steven Canny and John Nicholson as a brilliant burlesque send up that comes across as a hilarious parody. Doyle actually brought Sherlock back from the dead after he killed him and Moriarty off in “The Final Problem” in 1893. The demand for Sherlock, the monetary lure and—some say—his mother resulted in the Sherlock’s return in “The Hound Of The Baskervilles.”
Three actors in this funny reconstruction of the 1901 classic seem to be having more fun than the audience and are probably working harder than ever. They portray 20 different characters with physical cavorting and complete costume changes by the minute. It stars Ron Campbell as Holmes—plus eight other roles—Michael Gene Sullivan as Watson and Darren Bridgett as the heir Baskerville. These are ultimate actors with amazing timing and they are a pleasure to watch. Jed Parsario, who plays a very visible stagehand, adds the joviality.
The whole first act runs at a rapid tempo with character and costume changes. The beginning of the second act is a remarkable bit of theatre that is uproarious. Ron Campbell’s infatuated tango as Cicille is a complete, well-done hoot. All this silliness is well placed with well-timed energy.
Director Robert Kelly—probably tongue in cheek and with a twinkle in his eye—shows an irresistible fondness and an enjoyment of every minute of participation in this regional premiere.
B. Modern’s costumes fly in and out and on and off and fit the moment. Andrea Bechert delivers a diversified set that keeps the mood—moving at a fast pace. Lighting by Steven B. Mannshardt is masterfully handled and sound by and Cliff Caruthers adds to complete this fine production.
For an evening of fun and complete off the wall joyfulness, don’t miss TheatreWorks production of “The Hounds Of The Baskervilles.”
