SAN MATEO—The Cougars had to battle not only Hillsdale, but the wind, too—and they didn’t let either get the best of them.
Christopher blanked the Knights 16-0 Saturday in what coach Tim Pierleoni called one of the windiest games he’s ever coached in.
“We pretty much had to run the ball the whole time because the wind was blowing like crazy,” Pierleoni said. “It was a sideways wind the whole time, so that made it a little tougher.”
The Cougars defense was stellar, keeping the Hillsdale out of the endzone and adding a couple points to the scoreboard, too. Christopher’s first points came when a snap went over Brett Wetteland’s head and the defense jumped on it for a safety.
Christopher was able to get all it’s scoring done in the first half, with Matt Adamkiewicz finding PJ Reichert and Jacob Moen in the endzone—despite the winds knocking the ball around the field. The team took a 16-0 lead into halftime and that’s all it would need to get the job done.
“We would’ve liked to play a little better offensively, put up a few more points, but they were pretty tough,” Pierleoni said. “The Cover 4 did a pretty good job, they did good on the run. When we did throw the ball, we had to keep a really high percentage to short throws because the wind was just so bad.”
The Cougars used the windy contest to give the run game some action, but it was met by the Knights’ defense which kept it out of the endzone.
Moen was stellar on both sides of the ball, picking up key tackles on defense while making several catches on offense.
The Cougars (3-1) will take their bye week before opening Monterey Bay League play at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 with Watsonville at home. The break, Pierleoni said, couldn’t come at a better time.
“It’s going to be a tough league and we’re excited about getting after our league opponents,” the Cougar coach said. “We have a pretty good system and now we’re really excited about getting into league play. It’s good to get this bye week, it’s a good time for us. The kids are going to get healed up and get ready to go.”
