GILROY – The 24-year-old unincorporated Gilroy man accused of molesting a 14-year-old child pled not guilty to the charges in court Friday.

A preliminary hearing for Pablo Enrique Castillo is set for Jan. 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the San Martin courthouse where a judge will determine if there is enough evidence for a case.

“The standard is pretty low. The prosecution just needs to show evidence that a crime was committed and that Mr. Castillo likely committed the crime,” Deputy Public Defender Kelley Paul said.

Castillo was arrested Oct. 18 for multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14. If found guilty, Castillo could face life in prison.

Sher-iff’s deputies made the arrest after a colleague of Castillo’s alerted them of a videotape showing Castillo and the minor in various sexual acts.

Castillo has been held at the Santa Clara County jail since October on $1 million bail.

Paul said her office has not yet received enough facts to make a request to waive or reduce bail.

“At this point we’re still receiving incoming discoveries,” Paul said.
