HOLLISTER – The Gilroy High girls volleyball team dropped a tough one Wednesday to the top-ranked Hollister Lady Haybalers in three games – 15-7, 15-6, and 15-2.

Although the Lady Mustangs faced a taller Haybalers front-line, they were never intimidated. Gilroy, now 2-6 in TCAL, is continuing to work hard and give it everything they’ve got on the court.

“I talked to them before the game and reminded them that they are a good team,” head coach Sam Navarez said. “We only have a week left in our season and it is going to go by quick and I just wanted the girls to be focused.”

The Lady Mustangs were up against the Lady Haybalers – who are the eighth ranked team in the state.

In the first match, Gilroy fell behind fast – spotting Hollister a 9-2 lead. Nevertheless, they managed to rally back with their patented teamwork and hustle. The word quit was not in the Lady Mustangs’ minds the whole night. Senior Shayna Kiefer’s set to a Lourella Palao kill cut the margin to 13-7, but that was short-lived as the Lady Haybalers went to their star – Kim Dabo – who powered her way through the Lady Mustangs ‘D’ and finished the game.

The second game Gilroy took the lead at 2-1 and shared sideouts for a while. Hollister, however, took control of the game and ended things very quickly. The Mustangs highlight was some great digs by the defense, but the powerful hits were too much.

In game-three, the Lady Haybalers never looked back – cruising to a 15-2 victory for the three-game sweep.

Gilroy was on the defensive the whole night against the hard-hitting Hollister squad. Gilroy was unable to get comfortable on offense – which hurt their playmaking.

The Lady Mustangs’ next game will be Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the Notre Dame Spirits.
