If a robot were to swing a golf club the same way time after time, the results would be exactly the same time after time as well. Change the ball position just a little each time and you will get completely different results each time.
Now we certainly aren’t robots so we can’t expect to swing the same way each time. However, through practice we can get our swing to repeat with some level of consistency.
One main flaw I see in several players is even though their swing may be repeating they don’t position the ball in their stance the same way. If you position the ball too far forward, you will hit behind the ball, top it, or hit it left. Position the ball too far back and you will drive it into the ground or hit it to the right if it does get airborn.
The ball position changes with your different clubs. Your short irons (7-SW) should be played in the center of your stance. Your mid irons should be played in a 2/3 position with the ball slightly closer to your left foot than the right. Your fairway woods should be played in a 3/4 position with the ball just a few inches inside the left heel.
Finally, the driver should be played off the left instep. The reason the driver is the furthest forward is because that is the only shot that you want to strike on the upswing. The rest of the shots off the ground need to be swept or hit on the downswing.
Remember, when all else fails, take a lesson, you’ll be surprised how much we can help.
