Final drive stalls at 30-yard line.
SARATOGA – The last remaining Gilroy Browns playoff team met its match Sunday as the Pee Wees battled against the East Bay Warriors in the Peninsula Pop Warner Division II Championship game.
The locals – representing the Southern Division – found themselves in a defensive dogfight with their Northern Division opponents. But the Warriors found the end zone before the end of regulation to steal a 7-0 championship victory away from the Browns.
After three quarters of action, the teams remained in a scoreless tie with neither one making any costly mistakes for the other to capitalize on.
In the fourth quarter, the Browns made their strongest push with a long drive down to the East Bay 25-yard line. But following a pair of incompletions, the Warriors came up with a crucial interception – running it back to their own 40-yard line.
On their ensuing possession, the Warriors mounted the only touchdown drive of the contest with 45 ticks left on the clock.
With their backs against the wall, the Browns moved the ball up field and into scoring position. But Gilroy’s drive was stalled on the 30-yard line by an East Bay defense that has not allowed a point all season long.
The Pee Wees still captured their first runner-up trophy and vow to come back even stronger next season.
