Early this morning, unknown male suspects broke into a man’s house and beat him so severely that he was flown to a regional hospital to undergo surgery for head trauma, police said.

Shortly before 2:15 a.m., the suspects broke into the 46-year-old white male’s residence on the 1500 block of Welburn Avenue and hit the victim repeatedly with blunt objects, police said. Gilroy police, sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, but police said they could not locate the suspects.

Police said that there were other people in the house at the time of the attack, but none of them was injured. Police said they did not know how many people were in the house or what relation they had to the man.

Police said that there was no indication that the crime was gang-related or racially motivated, but they did not know whether the man knew his attackers. In addition, police did not know whether the suspects took anything from the house. However, police said that the assailants used force to break into the home.

Police, who did not know the number of attackers or the weapons used, are waiting for the man to recover to interview him. The injuries he suffered were serious, but not necessarily life-threatening, police said. Police had no update on the man’s condition Tuesday afternoon.

When contacted Tuesday morning and afternoon, neighbors either said they had not heard anything and were not aware of the crime or that they heard little and primarily from media outlets.

Police originally misstated in a press release Tuesday morning that the crime took place on the 1500 block of Mantelli Drive. When contacted, police confirmed the home invasion occurred on the 1400 block of Welburn.

More on this developing story will be posted Wednesday throughout the day.
