Gavilan’s women’s volleyball beat visiting Hartnell in three
straight games Friday night: 25-14, 25-12, 25-22.
The Rams’ men’s soccer team wasn’t as fortunate, falling 4-1 to
Hartnell earlier that same day.
GILROY – Gavilan women’s volleyball bounced back from a defeat to Cabrillo two days earlier to beat visiting Hartnell in three straight games Friday: 25-14, 25-12, 25-22.
The Lady Rams (12-8) have now won three of their last four matches to tie the total amount of wins the club had a year ago.
Freshman Bri Romero led the way for Gavilan with 12 kills, Jamie Skocko had 29 assists and Nicole Falcao added 19 digs. Arica Hernandez and Cheyenne Hambey had nine and seven kills, respectively, for the Lady Rams.
Chabot College will visit Gavilan on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for a non-conference match. The Lady Rams will then host West Valley at the same time on Friday.
MEN’S SOCCER
Despite a strong second half of play, the Gavilan men’s soccer team remains without a win in the Coast Conference after they lost 4-1 to Hartnell College on Friday in Gilroy.
Hartnell, considered one of the top teams in the state, took a commanding lead at halftime before the Rams displayed their strong second-half performance, but missed opportunities and a three-goal deficit at the break prevented any such comeback.
“We made a lot of mistakes (in the first half), and it cost us,” coach Albert Marques said. “The second half we played well, but when you’re down …
“The boys played well but not at the Hartnell-level.”
Gavilan is now 0-6 in the Coast Conference, 4-8 overall.
Victor Iracheta scored the Rams’ lone goal on the day on an assist from Joel Gutierrez. Gavilan had other opportunities as well, but Marques said they connected with the post a couple times and missed a penalty kick at one point in the second half.
“Effort-wise, we played really well,” Marques said.
Hartnell added a late goal in the final minute during stoppage time to take a 4-1 lead.
Gavilan will visit Cupertino Tuesday to take on De Anza College at 4 p.m.
