SARATOGA – It all looked so promising to start, but the Gavilan women’s volleyball team ended up falling in agonizing fashion Wednesday night at West Valley College, dropping the final match of the season in five sets: 25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 16-18.
The Lady Rams (16-11 overall) finish Coast Conference play with a 6-4 record, good for third place but not good enough to advance to the regional playoffs. It’s likely Gavilan would have needed to win in four sets Wednesday to advance.
“We won game one pretty handily and felt pretty good about what was going on,” Lady Rams coach Kevin Kramer said. “If we had won game four we would have had it.”
Taking the third set 25-19, Gavilan had the momentum, but West Valley, seeing its season slipping away, responded.
“All credit goes to West Valley,” Kramer said. “You talk about heart and determination – they battled.”
The Lady Rams even led 13-9 in the fifth and final frame, but West Valley again fought back to regain the lead.
Some of Gavilan’s six freshmen were already talking about next season after the match, Kramer said, which is a good sign for the future.
“I overheard the freshmen talking about putting in the time to not let this happen next year,” he said.
Of the six, Bri Romero of San Benito High is expected to assume a more vocal role. All will be contributing, though.
“It’s a great class,” Kramer said, “so I’m really looking forward to working with them.”
