Down to seven players, Gilroy’s varsity boys basketball team put out a strong effort against the Palma Chieftains Monday night, but a slow second half offensively stalled the Mustangs hopes of pulling off the upset.
Palma, tied for first place in the Tri-County Athletic League at 6-1, defeated Gilroy 55-45, with Clark Fox and Davis Fales leading the Chieftains with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Gilroy, which was ahead 23-21 at halftime, was led by Tyler Hartman, who had 17 points and five rebounds, and made all nine of his free throws. Derek Jensen was the second leading scorer for the Mustangs with 14.
“The kids played awesome,” GHS assistant coach Jeremy Dirks said. “They showed some serious emotion. I don’t believe in moral victories, but that’s the closest you get to one.”
Dirks added that Gilroy expects to be down to seven players for some time.
The Mustangs are now 7-15 overall, 1-6 in the TCAL. The team’s next game will be Friday at San Benito, which is tied in the league standings with Palma.
Junior Varsity Note:
Gilroy’s junior varisty squad got revenge from a 35-point defeat to Palma earlier in the year by beating the Chieftains 42-28 Monday.
Bryan Sanchez led the Mustangs in scoring with 12 points, Michael Hartman had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Michael Aldridge and Raul Quintanar had seven points each.
Delopo Opere was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder with 11.
