A middle-aged Morgan Hill man was assaulted early Tuesday morning on Monterey Road near Spring Avenue by two young men who were trying to rob him, police said.
The 58-year-old man was not seriously injured. He was riding his bike at 1:52 a.m. when he was jumped by two male suspects, one 17-year-old and the other possibly a 19- or 20-year-old. The suspects demanded his money, and when he refused they assaulted him, knocking him off the bike during the struggle. The two males, pushed him to the ground and hit him repeatedly on the face and head, but he was able to defend himself, according to Morgan Hill police Special Operations Sgt. Jerry Neumayer. The two men ran off northbound on Monterey Road.
The 58-year-old man told officers his head, shoulder and knee hurt, but he refused medical treatment.
Officers responded to the area to look for the suspects and were in the Terracina Apartment complex on East Dunne Avenue when they saw the two men walking through the complex, Neumayer said. As officers approached, the two fled, and officers gave chase. With the help of Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office deputies, a perimeter was set up in the area and the 17-year-old suspect, a Morgan Hill resident, was eventually apprehended. He was positively identified and subsequently arrested, then booked into juvenile hall on suspicion attempted robbery, battery, and resisting arrest.
The second man escaped and is still at large, police said. He is described as a white male with fair skin, slender and tall, possibly 19 to 20 years old, and believed to be 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds.
