On April 19, South Valley Middle School 7th grader Derek Shingu competed in the Northern Junior Olympics in Oakland.

At the 80 pound, 13-14-year-old intermediate division, Shingu went unopposed, advancing to the Olympic Regional Championship Competition which will be held May 10th in Avenal.

Shingu had the opportunity to fight the 85-pound division unopposed champion, Edwardo Alvarez of Oakland. Shingu, entering with 20 fights on his record, took on a more experienced Alvarez, who had over 30 bouts, but it didn’t seem to matter in the ring. Although Derek was lighter in weight and had fewer fights on his record, his skills in the ring were impressive, according to his trainer and coach Jerry Rodriguez.

“Derek is in tip-top shape and has his technique in order,” Rodriguez said. “He trains hard, has a great deal of potential and a promising future in boxing.”

Left 2 Right, Silver & Black as well as Gilroy’s other boxing clubs wanted to thank Gilroy Community Youth Center and the city of Gilroy for giving them a place to train.
