GILROY – Gilroy High’s girls tennis team had no issues with North Salinas Tuesday, taking the first Tri-County Athletic league matchup of the season 7-0.

The Vikings were unable to win more than two games in any set of the seven matches, which gave Mustangs coach Jami Reynolds plenty to feel proud about.

“We beat them last year, but you never know what the new year will bring,” Reynolds said. “I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls. They’re really fun to work with and it makes practices fun.”

No. 4 singles player Alissa Castro was the lone Gilroy player to win without giving up a game, but all other matches weren’t even close.

Meha Munshi defeated Jenilyn Mina in the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-1, and No. 1 doubles pairing Kim Johnson and Holly Hunter defeated Alex Kemp and Racheal Wilkinson by the same score. Melanie Morelos and Ashley Nguyen impressed Reynolds by their ability to jell together quickly after Morelos’ original partner, Lindsay Holt, was forced to sit out after breaking her wrist in a softball tournament over the weekend.

“They’re doing really well together,” Reynolds said of the new twosome.

The Mustangs will have a practice match with Carmel today at 3:30 p.m. before resuming league play at Alvarez on Sept. 23.
