Two weekend car crashes claimed the lives of a Fremont teen and a Lathrop man.

A 20-year-old Fremont man and his 19-year-old male passenger were traveling northbound on U.S. 101 south of Metcalf Road Sunday morning when their Lexus spun out of control, leaving the vehicle inoperable and blocking the highway’s fast lane. The vehicle was struck by an oncoming Chevrolet van traveling in the blocked lane, killing the teenage passenger in the Lexus.

The driver of the van suffered minor injuries. His two passengers were transported to an area hospital and will live, Sgt. Dave Hill of the California Highway Patrol said. The driver and passengers in the van were from Fresno. The driver of the Lexus also survived with moderate injuries, Hill said.

Alcohol was not a factor though police are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the initial collision, Hill said.

“With something like this, it’s premature to say what happened,” he said. “By the end of the week, we should have a better grasp of what happened.”

Friday evening, a 51-year-old Lathrop man was killed when he collided into the rear end of a parked big rig near Dinosaur Point.

The man was driving his Ford westbound on Highway 152 west of Fifield Road when he careened off the road, crashing into a semi that was parked well off the road in an area designed for weighing trucks. Witnesses told police the driver of the Ford had been swerving prior to the crash, according to a press release.

The driver of the big rig was uninjured, police said. The cause of the accident is unknown, but alcohol may be a contributing factor, according to the press release. Because it was a fatal accident, police won’t receive the toxicology results for another two to three weeks, Hill said.
