Through the first 10 days of a countywide crackdown, law enforcement officers have arrested 259 individuals on suspicion of driving under the influence, a number far off from last year’s pace, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department.

At this juncture last year during “Avoid the 13” – an annual campaign named for the 13 agencies ramping up efforts to nab drunken drivers – 320 arrests had been made, the Sheriff’s department reported.

There were no DUI deaths in the county Christmas night, but there were two DUI-related traffic collisions, resulting in three minor injuries, according to a press release.

Gilroy and Morgan Hill police will administer a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Thursday night in Morgan Hill.

The increased, anti-DUI efforts began Dec. 16 and will conclude Jan. 2.
