TENNIS: Alisal sweeps doubles play in 5-2 win over Christopher

Though the Christopher High girls volleyball team fell two victories short of qualifying for the Central Coast Section playoffs, the 2011 season can still be considered a banner year. The Cougars posted a program best 18 wins, including seven in Monterey Bay League play en route to a fourth-place finish in the seven-team league under first-year head coach Tom Schatz.

Select players were rewarded for their efforts during the team’s successful season with the release of the MBL’s all-league list.

Senior middle blocker Merrett Brown, who led the team with 224 kills, earned first-team honors. Brown was also second on the team in blocks with 21 and had 33 aces. Schatz said Brown received the third-highest number of votes among his coaching peers.

“(She) was hands down the court leader for us,” Schatz said.

Juniors Alex Gerberick and Hanna Tabron (both served as team captains) received second-team accolades, and senior Paulina Vo-Griffin was named the team’s honoree for the Sportsmanship Award.

Gerberick, the team’s starting setter for the second straight year, posted 763 assists, while Tabron had a team-high 61 blocks to accompany her 162 kills. Vo-Griffin had her hands in every facet of the Cougars’ game, registering 70 kills, 124 digs and led the way with 45 aces.
