CHS looking to snap four-game skid against Pajaro Valley on
Wednesday.
A strong first quarter allowed the Christopher High boys basketball team to establish a 15-9 lead as the second period got underway.
“We started really well,” CHS head coach Kaden Bahner said. “We put pressure on the ball and created some turnovers and capitalized on them.”
However, the wheels derailed in the second as the Seaside Spartans outscored the Cougars 19-6 en route to a 66-50 victory in Monterey Bay League action Monday night in Seaside.
“Our Achilles heel lately has been that second quarter,” Bahner said. “We almost seemed surprised by their half-court, full-court or trap pressure defense. That second quarter kind of took the wind out of us.”
Though the outcome remained the same, the Cougars did keep matters much closer than the first time the two teams engaged in Gilroy on Jan. 11.
“We played a much better game this time around, it was just inconsistent,” Bahner said. “But you see the improvement there. We are learning.
“We had some guys step up late in the game but we have to be more consistent in executing what we want to do.”
Takoda Bowers led the Cougars with 12 points.
The Cougars (5-14, 2-6 MBL), though mired in a four-game losing streak, have an opportunity to right the ship heading into the final two weeks of the regular season and the league tournament. CHS hosts Pajaro Valley (3-13, 2-7 MBL) on Wednesday then travels to Castroville to visit winless North Monterey County – two teams the Cougars defeated earlier in the season.
