HONORS

Jacob Birtola

Navy Seaman recruit Jacob R. Birtola, a 2010 graduate of Live Oak High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Birtola completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Its distinctly ”Navy” flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

Sandra Talavera

Gavilan College’s Employee of the Month for August is Sandra Talavera.

Sandra is a senior program specialist in the financial aid department. She started with the district in 1995 becoming a permanent staff member in 1996.

Sandra provides outstanding customer service to students everyday and goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure they understand the financial aid process. Sandra also works closely with new and continuing veteran students to make sure they are provided with the services needed to ensure their success at Gavilan College. She also works closely with the financial aid director on the annual scholarship ceremony preparing certificates, taking pictures and putting the Power Point presentation together for the award ceremony.

Susie Chris

Gavilan College’s Employee of the Month for September is Susie Chris.

Susie is an admissions/student records technician and started with the district in 2005 becoming a permanent staff member in 2008.

Susie is responsible for all the official transcripts that are sent out, and also provides the help over the phone when students online call the A&R help desk for assistance logging in to SSB. She provides tremendous customer service, both to students, as well as staff and faculty here on campus, and always does it with a smile in a kind and gentle manner. She often goes out of her way to accommodate students who, for whatever reason, discovered they needed an official transcript sent to another school “yesterday.” Susie has been known to drive to the post office to send mail, if the postal carrier has already made her trip to Gavilan for the day. Susie’s follow through on everything she does is exemplary. Her kindness and support make her a fantastic team player, and a great person to be around every day.
