Head coach Paul Wells said “major changes in alignment” contributed to the Christopher High girls water polo team’s triumph over a “tenacious” Watsonville squad 14-12 on Wednesday – the Cougars’ first win for the girls’ program.
“The girls believed in the new alignment – you could see it in their eyes – and it showed on offense where the Christopher girls outshot Watsonville 30 to 26,” Wells said.
Seven Cougars registered goals – Sabrina Seery, Amanda Sifuentes, Kaitlin Ramirez (5), Anna Higginbotham, Natalie Garcia (2), Shannon McAvoy and Julia Graham (3.)
New goalie Bella Marquez had 10 saves for a defensive effort Wells said he was very pleased with.
“The team was communicating, anticipating, switching on picks, playing in the passing lanes and covering drives – sound defensive play,” he said. “The defensive play of freshmen Hannah Marquez, Sabrina Seery and Natalie Garcia showed tremendous improvement in understanding the game. While there were were some standout performances, it was a team effort and everyone contributed.”
