Mustangs knock off Los Gatos 1-0
The Gilroy High field hockey team picked as good a time as any to snare its first Mount Hamilton Division victory of the 2011 season.
The Mustangs (1-1-2 Mount Hamilton) outlasted the three-time reigning Central Coast Section Division I champion Los Gatos Wildcats 1-0 on the road Friday afternoon.
“I think it was a huge moral boost to the kids. The girls were definitely up for it,” head coach Adam Gemar said.
Ezzie Gobea scored with an assist from Kaylana Mah off of a short-corner early in the second half.
“(Los Gatos) was pressuring hard at the end. They had like 11 short- corners. It was in our end most of the time. It was all Los Gatos for the last 15 minutes, that’s for sure,” Gemar said. “Our goalie (Marissa Mazzone) had a good game, which we needed.”
It was the first meeting between the two squads since their November clash to decide the 2010 CCS champion – a contest that went to Los Gatos 3-1.
GHS had tied Saratoga 1-1 earlier in the week and the Wildcats were coming off of a 3-1 loss to first-place Saint Francis.
The Mustangs play the Lancers on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Mountain View.
“That’s the biggest test so far,” Gemar said.
