Dear Editor and Friends,
It has been two weeks since the earthquake occurred and I am simply amazed with the resilience and efficiency of the Japanese people. There have been countless stories of love, bravery and miracles circulating throughout the country and the world; unfortunately, stories of loss and sorrow are equally, if not more common.
Although Takko has been lucky enough to have been spared from the worst of the damage, everyone here has been deeply and emotionally affected and the need to reach out and offer any kind of assistance to those on the Pacific coast has already been thrown into full drive.
This past week, Takko residents collected much-needed items including warm clothes, diapers, face masks, tissues, etc to send to the affected areas. Thirty minutes into the drive, there were several bags and boxes of items already donated and many more arrived for the next few hours.
Spring break is here! The school year has ended and students are officially on vacation. This is simultaneously allowing for energy, gas and school lunch supply conservation.
Takko continues to be affected by the region-wide fuel shortage, although it seems to be improving little by little. Long lines at the gas stations have been resolved by issuing a number of tickets that can be redeemed throughout the day. Most deliveries are coming up through the round-about western highways until the eastern highways reopen.
Also, optimistic estimations say that the Shinkansen, the bullet train, for the Tohoku region may be reopening for full service by the end of April!
Mail seems to be arriving in a timely fashion! If you have a friend or loved one that you wish to send a little something to, please feel free. It may take a tad bit longer than usual, but we are receiving mail.
Again, I want to extend a sincere thank you to all that have been keeping us and the rest of Japan in their thoughts and prayers. Although the nation seems to be bouncing back at an impressive rate, it will be a very long road to recovery. Please continue to keep the people of Japan in your thoughts and prayers.
