It’s always good to read Lisa’s columns and also to see what Marc Perkel has to say. Since they are both liberals/progressives, as I am, I was interested in their opinions about the public employees’ pay, benefits and pensions. I find myself pretty much in agreement with them; firemen, policemen and teachers are professional people and probably should not have had unions in the first place.
Their unions have done a fine job of getting wonderful benefits for their members, but, unfortunately, to the detriment of the rest of us who have to foot the bill.
I have been retired for some time. My ex-employer does not give any cost of living adjustments nor do they pay for my medical benefits. I don’t quite know why public employees should do better than those of us who worked in the private sector.
I am not against unions because I know they can do a lot of good for workers; however power corrupts and unions are not immune to this effect. Let’s hope that our city, as well as the others who are also over-extended because of the gigantic pensions, etc., can come to some reasonable conclusion to this problem.
