Cougars pound out 12 hits in five-inning victory.
The Christopher High baseball team killed two birds with one stone against non-league opponent Anzar on Tuesday in Gilroy.

Not only did the Cougars’ bats erupt for their largest output thus far this season, but manager Ryan Dequin’s squad also picked up its first victory 17-7.

“I told the guys that they can’t be blinded by a 10-run win,” Dequin said. “We will take a look back and look at what we did wrong and fix those things.”

After Anzar knotted matters at 3-3 in the top of the third, the Cougars posted a five-spot in their half of the inning to grab an 8-3 advantage. However the Hawks refused to go away, plating four runs in the top of the fourth.

“We shouldn’t have given them seven runs but I’ll take the win,” Dequin said.

The Cougars, though, ripped off nine unanswered runs over the next two innings to end the game after the fifth due to the 10-run rule.

Ryan Fredricks (3-for-4, four RBI) and Patrick Valdez produced three hits apiece as the Cougars pounded out 12 as a team.

Brian Ransom went the distance on the bump, surrendering the seven runs, although just two were earned, and had nine strikeouts.

The Cougars (1-4) continue non-league action Thursday at Soquel.
