Theater makes debut: Limelight Theater will make its performance debut with a staged reading of “The Outrageous Adventures of Sheldon & Mrs. Levine: A Son’s Elusive Search for His Mother’s Happiness” by Sam Borick and Julie Stein at 8 p.m. today and Saturday at the Gilroy Arts Center, 7341 Monterey St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Bring your own dinner. Writers, learn how to show not tell: Martha Engber, author of the “The Wind Thief”, will shed light on one of the most oft-spoken, frustrating pieces of advice in all writerdom – show, don’t tell – from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at BookSmart, 80 E. Second St., Morgan Hill. Through writing exercises and discussion, she’ll give you the tools to show and tell as you see fit. Cost: $25. Call for reservations. Details 778-6467.

Italian Catholic Polenta Dinner: The Italian Catholic Federation Branch 28 will hold its 11th annual Polenta Dinner Saturday at St. Mary Hall, 11 First St. The meal will be prepared by chef Mario Fiorio and crew. Take out is available after 5:30 p.m. (bring your own containers), and dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. Cost: $15 donation for adults and $5 for children younger than 12.
