Gilbert S. “Papa” Chacon passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in Hollister at the age of 74.
He was born in LaColonia Terrazas, Chihuahua, Mexico. He came to Hollister 60 years ago and married his wife, Socorro, in 1952 in Fresno.
He worked in the local cannery, in agriculture and for San Juan Bautista State Park.
He liked to garden, fish and hunt, was an avid LA Dodger fan and a Raider fan, liked to barbecue for his family. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, a counselor for Alcoholics Anonymous and was a member of Grupo 14 de Marzo, Teamsters Union Local 890. He was the rock of his family and helped so many people. His children and grandchildren were his first priority in his life. He considered them his treasure. He was very proud of all of them.
He is survived by his wife, Socorro Chacon of Hollister, his children and their spouses, Martha Kelly (Milt) of Hollister, Eva Gaitan (Mike) of Hollister, Rita Espinoza (Leonso) of Hollister, Gilbert Chacon Jr (Lisa) of Hollister and Adrian Chacon (Erin) of San Jose,
his brothers and sisters, Rosa Fausto of Guadalajara, Mexico, Yolanda Marta of Hollister, Jesse Alvarez of Hollister, Lilia Figueroa of Hollister and Javier Alvarez of Los Angeles. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Sonya, Angel, Abie, Mono, Yvonne, Mikey, Stevie, Gabriel, Yvette, Lee, Gilbert III, Keesha, Salina, Jessica and Marissa and his 10 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Blanca Chavez and his grandson, David Gaitan and his parents, Saturnino and Josefina.
Friends can pay their respects on Friday, August 26, 2011, from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 P.M. at the church.
Private cremation will follow the Mass.
Donations are preferred to Grupo 14 de Marzo c/o the funeral home.
