138723~650-to-1 counselor ratio ridiculous—The ridiculous
ratio of students to counselors at Gilroy High School
– 650 to 1 – isn’t unique in cash-strapped public schools in
California, but that doesn’t make it acceptable.
“Students need to understand what courses they should take in order to be considered by their preferred colleges and universities.”

How can any counselor know what hundreds of universities require? Students can ask a university that interests them about their requirements.

“They should know what grade point averages, extracurricular activities, and test scores those schools demand.”

Same answer as I gave above.

“They should be able to get direction for help in raising GPAs and test scores…”

For most students, all they need to do is to study more and pay attention. Others can take the practice exams that are widely available, such as practice SATs. Most importantly, teachers know best the strengths and weaknesses of their students, not counselors. Students who want to do better are wise to ask their teacher.
