Glass bubbles in the penguin enclosure allow people to get up

A behind-the-scenes peek at the residents and inner workings of
the Monterey Bay Aquarium

The octopus tank is surrounded by AstroTurf. Of course, the two Giant Pacific octopi living in the tank have no plans to tee off any time soon, but the AstroTurf is a must-have. It’s the only surface that an octopus can’t get a solid grip on. If it wasn’t there, the octopi could – and likely would – climb out of the tank, cruise around the room and possibly get into other tanks for a midnight snack.

It’s fun and interesting facts like the AstroTurf-lined tank that most visitors to the Monterey Bay Aquarium never know about. Many South Valley residents have made the trek over to the facility and may think they’ve seen all there is to see. But the kind folks at the aquarium recently threw open the back doors to the world-famous establishment to offer a behind-the-scenes view of the slippery residents and inner workings.

Think you’ve seen all there is to see and know all there is to know? Think again.
