Big Kudos After a Wildly Successful Gilroy Memorial Day String of Events

Dear Editor,

The crowds are gone, the floats have all been broken down and put away, the bands have put their instruments away, but the memories of the day will linger. Memorial Day 2007 is now history.

On behalf of the Gilroy Memorial Day Committee, I want to thank all those in our community who came out for the many different Gilroy Memorial Day events. Your support of these events makes all the work it takes to put them on, well worth the time and energy.

I would like to first thank our event sponsors, if it was not for their support, none of this would have been possible. Our major event sponsor for the fifth year in a row is Wal-Mart. Their constant support of this day and the events in Gilroy are always welcome.

The other supporters were Dividend Homes and Shapell Homes who always step forward to help us with generous assistance. Gilroy Rotary and The James Group also helped support the teams of people responsible for the events along with Giacalone Design Services, Cresco Equipment, St. Louise Hospital and the RV Outlet.

The remembrance event at Saint Mary’s Cemetery was organized and run by the team of Wayne Cegelske, Al Schmidt and Jessie Sanchez. These three men organized the event that reminds us of why we have Memorial Day. Many thanks to Don Gage for reading off the names, always a difficult task.

The Parade Team consisted of Heidi Unger, Mark Jacobsen, Bob Dillon, Dion Bracco, Cherie Somavia, Jeff and Barbara Orth. This team recruited volunteers, wrote scripts, contacted organizations and worked all day to make this parade one of the best ever. A special thanks needs to go to Cherie for putting in the longest day of this group. Her morning started at about 5:30am working with Steve Ashford in getting the cones and barricades delivered. I said my good-bye to her at about 6pm at Christmas Hill Park. Though Steve is not a part of the committee, he is a very important part of the team. He helps us every year with the traffic control equipment, I never see him stop or take a rest.

The Family Fun Day at the park was under the supervision of Bob Dillon all day. Talking with Bob, we witnessed the largest gathering of people for this event. Carl Epolite was responsible for getting all those great looking cars in the parade and at the car show at the park – more than 50 entries in the car show.

Thank you team for a great event. Thank you Gilroy for supporting the Memorial Day events.

Craig Gartman, 2007 Gilroy Memorial Day Committee Chairman

Appreciates the Graduation Coverage and Working With the Local Newspaper

Dear Editor,

Please accept our sincere gratitude for the recent coverage of our St. Mary School graduations!

Chris Quirk, from a quick phone call, created two nice pieces for the digest section last Saturday and this past Monday.

And we were so pleased to have photographer Lora Schraft with us during the entire graduation ceremony to take some great photos of our graduates. She captured the moment for our students and parents!

Thanks so much for another great year working with our local newspaper!
