Gilroy – It was a varsity girls water polo game, not a challenge between human and beast. But just as it is in reality, Cowboys prove to be slightly better swimmers than Mustangs.
Salinas’ varsity girls water polo team used a fast and aggressive style of play to keep Gilroy under control in a 10-2 win on Tuesday. GHS coach Andy Been credited the Cowboys’ lightning-fast swimmers for taking advantage of scoring opportunities.
“They have a lot of speed,” he said. “We had a pretty good defense, they just got away on some counter attacks.
“In the second quarter and the second half, they kind of swam us out of the pool,” Been said.
After taking a 1-0 lead to start the game on a Jenny Ailes goal, Gilroy thought the day would go in its favor.
“Coming out tough, basically, we were really going for it, “Ailes said. “It just got away from us as they started scoring.”
The Cowboys put eight unanswered goals in the cage before Ailes provided GHS’ final goal of the game in the third quarter. The Mustangs had some excellent scoring opportunities, but the ball just couldn’t seem to find its way past Salinas’ keeper.
“The shots we were taking were a little hurried and they needed to be a little more pinpoint,” Been said.
The Mustangs dropped to 3-5 in the Tri-County Athletic League, putting the team squarely behind the eight-ball in terms of seeding for the league playoffs.
“We’re middle of the pack, probably have to beat (Salinas) in the TCAL tourney or Hollister,” Been said.
San Benito is 11-4 while the Cowboys moved to 10-4 with the win.
“Our work is cut out for us,” Been said.
JV Note: The junior varsity girls water polo team bucked Salinas on Tuesday, saddling the Cowboys with a 10-9 loss.
Chelsea Hill scored seven goals to lead the team, while Kaitlin Muraoka had three of her own.
“(Chelsea) dominated the pool on offense,” coach Andy Been said. “(Kaitlin) had kind of a breakout game.”
The coach also gave credit to Leah Ailes for shutting down Salinas’ hole player, who only took one shot in the contest.
