Let Elected Officials Run The City

Keep our new sports park spiffy

I have a suggestion for the sports park: They have beautiful trash cans at the new sports park; however, there aren’t enough of them by the parking lot where people take things out of their cars and put them in the trash cans, so I think the trash cans near the parking lot will fill up, the few that there are. And the city should put in three or more trash cans and that way they won’t overflow and we won’t have garbage blowing around in our lovely new sports park.

Red Phone: Dear Caller, we contacted Chris Orr, the Landscape Operations Supervisor for the city, who told us there isn’t currently a problem with excess garbage in the cans. “For events such as Little League opening day, we put out extra temporary garbage cans,” Orr said. “When Little League starts league play there, we will monitor the garbage cans and install more if we see that the existing cans are inadequate.” That’s what we like to see, the city ready to play ball.

An ideal new schools chief

With all the press you’ve been giving the oncoming investigation, interrogation, whatever, of the upcoming superintendent of schools, perhaps you might run a section in the paper asking readers what they would like to ask the superintendent to be.

Red phone: Dear Caller, Red Phone would be happy to take those comments. What would you like the superintendent to be? Let’s hear it.

Who services the bus stops?

Occasionally I take the northbound 68 going to San Jose to go to work in the morning. The stop I use is the new downtown stop on Fifth by the billiard hall. My concern is that as I stand here now I’ve counted 73 cigarette butts at the new bus stop that is complete with a garbage can and two new benches – a very nice bus stop. My concern is that the landscaping or subcontractors for the city that are responsible for cleaning up the downtown walk by the bus stop emptying garbages, picking up litter and little pieces of paper, but they don’t attend to the bus stop. Is this because it’s a VTA stop?

Red phone: Dear Caller, Red Phone contacted Chris Orr, the Parks and Landscape Supervisor for the city, who then contacted VTA and was told it checks its bus stops once a month. There is a hotline that can be called for maintenance issues (408) 321-5800. City staff has cleaned around the bench, Orr said, and has asked the city’s landscape maintenance contractor to clean around this bench when they do the area. Wouldn’t life be simpler, dear caller, if everyone quit smoking?

Reader yelping about the noise

Given the latest in the series of ongoing issues in Gilroy regarding barking dogs, when is the Gilroy Police Department going to once and for all be empowered to start writing tickets to households who are not willing or able to control their dogs?

Red phone: Dear Caller, well, sounds as though you may have some experience with the subject. Red Phone contacted Sgt. Gillio with the Gilroy Police Police Department who assured us that the city has an ordinance “that enables us to issue citations to dog owners that allow their dogs to habitually make an unreasonable amount of noise. This requires the assistance of the offended or reporting party and in most cases where the officer does not hear the barking or noise caused by the dog, the reporting party would need to sign the citation. The reporting party would also have to attend a court hearing.”

So, there you go dear caller – if you’re willing to sign your name, or make a paw print, you’re halfway to resolving your problem.
