Gilroy – Gavilan’s bats finally awakened Tuesday as the Rams outscored Monterey Peninsula College 11-6 in Coast Conference action.

The Rams, who struggled to score runs over the weekend in the Shasta Tournament, carried that over against MPC. Gavilan trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the fifth.

And then the Rams collected five hits and scored four runs to draw within 6-5. In the sixth, Haylie Cloud’s bases-clearing double was the big hit in a five-run outburst that brought Gavilan (7-12 overall, 2-4 conference) from behind.

“Finally,” said Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson with a sigh. “They picked up the offense toward the end of the game.”

Jen McBain had a solid all-around game for the Rams. Starting at second base, McBain had two doubles, a single and a walk and scored three runs. When first-time starting pitcher Anisia Ceballos ran into trouble, McBain relieved with two outs in the second and Gavilan trailing 4-0.

McBain allowed one run over the final 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

“We made some changes defensively, and the girls weren’t used to the rotation,” Dequin-Thompson said. “Jen got back on the mound and we started picking it up with the bat.”

Cloud was the offensive leader with two hits and four RBI. Amanda Rosevear had three hits and two RBI, Angelina Fernandez had two hits and four RBI, and Amanda Perez doubled, walked three times and scored three runs.

It was Gavilan’s second win over MPC this season and snapped a four-game conference losing streak. The Rams continue conference action when they host Cabrillo at 3pm Thursday.
