Looking to bolster its depth while also giving underclassmen the experience of preparing for a big game, Gilroy varsity football pulled up 15 players form the junior varsity squad for the Central Coast Section playoffs. Coach Rich Hammond said only a couple kids could see action in Saturday’s first-round playoff game against Valley Christian, but just being in a big-game atmosphere should provide an excellent experience for the newcomers.
One player added to the roster who would be intriguing to see on the field is Joaquin Puente. Only a sophomore, Puente is a nose tackle listed at 6-feet-five-inches, 395 pounds. With the physical tools to dominate obviously in place, Puente could be a force in coming seasons with the proper drive and attitude.
According to Hammond, Valley Christian runs predominantly between the tackles in its Wing-T offensive formation. Placing Puente in the middle of the line to take up one, two, maybe even three blockers would be a sight to see. Gilroy’s run defense has been so much better over the course of the season though, putting Puente in the ballgame probably won’t be necessary.
– Expecting close to 4,000 fans for Saturday’s 7 p.m. game against Valley Christian, Gilroy High School will be selling tickets in advance this week at the ASB Office in the Student Center on campus. Tickets will be sold individually ($9 for adults, $5 for students, $2 for kids under 12) as well as in family packs ($18 for two adults and two kids).
– For those looking to get a closer view of the action, GHS will be auctioning off four sideline passes for the game to the highest bidder. Proceeds will go to the athletic department, with the cutoff for bids ending Friday at noon. If interested, send your email bid to Athletic Director Jack Daley (Ja********@*********ca.us).
