No right turn lane
“At the southwest intersection of Luchessa Avenue and Monterey Road (Suburban Gas Corner) the Luchessa side has a painted area that was done to create one lane for traffic to go straight or make a right turn onto Monterey Road.
Could you contact the city traffic engineer to relook at this intersection and evaluate painting out the markings so people can make a right turn onto Monterey Road?
Most drivers must not understand these markings to be for traffic channeling and drive over them to make a right turn.”
Red Phone:
Well caller, the intersection is painted so that there are crosswalks around the area and at that particular corner there is no sidewalk for pedestrians to wait before crossing Monterey Road. Currently, the spot is on private property which has yet to be developed, so the city has tried to delineate a protected area for the pedestrians to wait.
“We have tried to make a painted island so that motorists could drive around and not drive into the area where pedestrians would be standing,” said city engineer Don Dey. “Once that property develops, we will put in a full gutter, curb and sidewalk, and can remove that painted island. The reason it was painted was to locate a safety refuge for pedestrians, but because it is only painted, cars can drive over the paint.”
So drivers, beware when turning right on Monterey Road from Luchessa Avenue, stay in the through lane, switch on your blinker and leave the right side of the road for those on their footmobiles.
No animal control in gilroy
“Please tell me, why doesn’t a big city like Gilroy have any kind of animal control? If my kids are playing outside and a unleashed dog is running around who do I call for a fast response?
I wouldn’t want to bother our police officers – they have more important things to take care of around here. With a large population shouldn’t Gilroy have some kind of animal control patrolling our streets? Heck, sometimes I see chickens running around in my neighborhood and I don’t even live out in the country.
The City needs to take a good look at this and start putting the money into getting some kind of animal control around here. Gee, with all the big box stores in Gilroy, I think the city can spare some money to a cause like this. Let’s clean up Gilroy people!”
A response from a cyber reader: “Last I knew, the GPD had at least one if not two dedicated animal control officers. You had to call the GPD non-emergency number to get a hold of them. Not sure if that has changed or not.”
Red Phone:
First off, Red Phone appreciates the cyber support. It is much appreciated to have the extra help. It looked into the animal control situation and there are no specific animal control officers according to police dispatchers. GPD rotates officers for animal control and if there isn’t one assigned to the service for that day, then dispatch will contact a patrol unit they will take care of the situation.
So if there are chickens, dogs or any other critters on the loose in your neighborhood, call the non-emergency dispatch at 846-0350 and they will send someone your way.
